Famous Peacocks Series - Alice Peacock

Being on the road, meeting my fans and singing for you is one of the greatest joys of my life. For long periods of time, it IS my life. But I tell ya, there have been moments ...
I arrived in Denver a few weeks ago to a lot of talk about the big spring blizzard that was hitting Colorado. When I looked out the plane window, it didn't look that bad, just some drizzle. Then again, I did grow up in Minnesota so I've got a pretty high threshold for snow.
When I got to the car-rental agency, there were two agents on duty: one surly and resentful, just out of high school, the other an overly chatty type obviously lured out of retirement by the floundering economy. Both were ploddingly slow. I waited in line for at least 45 minutes before it was my turn. I got the young grump. Since I'd been traveling for a week and had transactions on my credit card from a couple of different cities, and since my credit card company has now decided it's also a branch of the (apparently overzealous) credit card-fraud police, my card was declined.
I called the credit card company and personally authorized the rental car charge, but unbeknownst to me, it was this agency's policy that once a card has been run, it can't be processed again for 24 hours. I was told that I was out of luck -- no rental car for me. I pleaded that I absolutely needed a car, that this was DENVER, a LARGE metropolis, for crying out loud, and that there was a BLIZZARD coming and that I had SHOWS to perform. All I got was a reptilian stare and an unconvincing, "I'm sorry."
By then the slushy snow was falling in earnest, matting my hair to my head as I shouldered my guitar (in its ridiculously heavy road case) and tried to roll my luggage (with its broken wheel) to another rental agency, like a Neanderthal dragging home the evening kill. I believe I even whimpered aloud. In fact, I'm whimpering a little now at the mere memory.
The agent at Dollar Rent A Car, Dederick, took pity on the pathetic shell of a woman I'd become and hooked me up with a four-wheel-drive Subaru at a ridiculously low rate, with full insurance coverage! My faith in humanity instantly restored, I told him I'd put him on the guest list for that night's show.
I had three gigs that weekend, one in Denver, one in Boulder and one up at Shoshoni Yoga Retreat (which almost didn't happen because they got four feet of snow). Miraculously, it was in the high '70s when I departed two days after the blizzard, and in the end, it was a glorious weekend of snow, sunshine, stretching, centeredness and fabulous vegetarian food. I'm happy to say that despite my rocky start in the Rockies, I'm now a devoted fan of Colorado and look forward to returning. Scroll down to see where else I'll be landing soon (and hopefully enjoying a hassle-free rental-car experience).
Cheers,

"This Chicago gal has been doing the proverbial 'bubbling under' act for three albums now, but with 'Love Remains,' cut down in Nashville with producer/songwriter Danny Myrick, she's cocked and loaded to do the proverbial 'busting out' thing -- and then some. First and foremost, Peacock is blessed with a killer set of pipes, expressive and fulsome (hints of everyone from Kim Richey and Mary Chapin Carpenter to Shania Twain and Linda Ronstadt), with an irresistible bluesy-rasp inflection that crops up from time to time. The record's got pop, it's got twang, it's got pedal steel reveries, it's got deeply soulful meditations, with a little bit of boot-scooting Tennessee, a little bit of kissing-in-the-sunshine SoCal, and a whole lotta sassysexycool Peacock.

"Want proof? Check out track #2, which cues up in a strummy/twangy dust storm of Shania 'n' Gretchen. Though set in Chicago and not in Nashville, it's pure Music Row, what with its slice-of-life tale of a sweet young thing who 'left home when she was 17/ got her first tattoo/ she never was the homecoming queen/ never was that cool,' along with the insanely hooky 'na-na-na-na' chorus that's destined to have the ladies locking arms and singing along at the top of their lungs at concerts. Seriously: somebody get this tune to a Nashville queen pronto and it'll go straight to the top of the country charts (although here's hoping that Peacock's version gets there first).

"Other highlights include the equally radio-worthy 'Hard Way,' hoisted aloft on steel guitar and smoky organ, plus -- once again -- a memorable, singalong chorus; 'City Of Angels,' which, with its subliminal hat-tip to the Eagles and a raveup vibe reminiscent of classic Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, is country-powerpop at its best (it's also a worthy addition to the canon of songs-about-Los-Angeles); and the dusky, gospellish waltz that is 'Trying To Hold Back Time,' another natural-for-Nashville number.

"At 15 songs, most of them hovering around the four-minute mark, and nearly an hour in length, 'Love Remains' might prove daunting to the short-attention-span iPod generation. But in its diversity, there's great wealth, and it holds up both as one extended listen and via the cherrypick-individual-tunes method. Even better: it's got the kind of drive and spunk that just makes you wanna root for Peacock, with her personality shining through on song after song. That, my friends, is what we call natural-born charisma. And you can't fake that. Standout Tracks: 'City Of Angels,' 'Real Life,' 'Love Remains.'"
